Controversy

• In 1982, he was arrested on charges of possessing illegal drugs and kept in jail for 5 months. 
• He was arrested in 1993 under TADA (Terrorist and Disruptive Activities Act) for possessing illegal weapons (AK-56 in this case) during the 1993 Mumbai blasts although he was   released on bail in October 1995, but He was arrested again in December 1995. In April 1997, he was again released on bail.

•  7 months spent in his prison at Arthur Road in Pune during the period 2006-07.

 • On 31 July 2007, the TADA court cleared him of charges related to the Mumbai blasts and sentenced him to 6 years rigorous imprisonment for possessing illegal weapons and taking him to Yerwada jail in Pune. He was granted bail on 20 August 2007 and sent back to prison on 22 October 2007. On 27 November 2007, the Supreme Court granted him bail.

 • On 21 March 2013, the Supreme Court of India upheld the TADA ruling, however, the sentence was imprisoned from 6 years to 5 years and a month to surrender.

His mother Nargis used to call him "Chand". Her mother, Nargis, suffering from pancreatic cancer, died on May 2, 1981, 5 days before the release of Sanjay's first film, "Rocky", which Nargis wanted to see. Son on the silver screen but unfortunately, he could not.

When he was in high school, he started taking drugs. He changed his name from "Sanjay" to "Sanjay" after his drug rehabilitation; As he wanted to start a new life with a new name.
