Farmer-turned-politician Ahmed Patel is currently a Member of Parliament and a senior leader of the Indian National Congress Party. He served as political secretary to Congress President Sonia Gandhi from 2001 to 2017. He is credited with the party's performance in the 2004 and 2009 general elections. Patel has represented the Parliament of India seven times, the lower house or Lok Sabha three times (1977–1989) and the upper house or Rajya Sabha four times (since 1993). As of date, he is the only Muslim MP from the state of Gujarat. On 9 August 2017, Ahmed Patel was re-elected to the Rajya Sabha after defeating BJP's Balwant Singh.
