As a child, he was a huge football fan but due to his brother's insistence, he was enrolled in a cricket academy.

He was often dropped from the team due to his attitude problem and was told that he once refused to carry drinks for a senior cricketer.



In the late 90s, after his successful tour to England, he moved in with his childhood friend Donna Roy because his family was hostile.

He is considered one of the most successful captains in the history of Indian cricket and was first appointed as the captain of the Indian cricket team in the year 2000 when Sachin Tendulkar stepped down for his health.

NatWest Tri-Series Finals 2002: Yuvraj Singh and Mohammad Kaif played a heroic role to overcome the middle-order collapse of India to achieve the most memorable win in the history of the game.  Sourav Ganguly takes off his shirt and celebrates in the Lord's balcony and is still fresh in the memories of many.



Dada also lead Kolkata Knight Riders. Ganguly, which was rolled out by Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), owned by Shah Rukh Khan, did not stay in the franchise long.  After being removed as KKR's captain in 2009, Ganguly was soon shown the exit by the management.


After not being retained by KKR for the IPL 2011 season, Ganguly played for Pune Warriors India for a few more seasons in the IPL before calling his career time in the T20 League.



He has an apartment complex in Kolkata named after him, "Sourav Housing Complex".

Following in the footsteps of Sachin Tendulkar, he opened a three-storey restaurant, "Sourav - The Food Pavilion" in Kolkata.



He currently has a member of the IPL Governing Council and a member of the Justice Mudgal Committee Investigation Panel for IPL Spot Fixing in a part of the Supreme Court of India.

On 23 October 2019, he took over as the 39th president of the BCCI.
