He was born in Oxford, England (about 300 years after Galileo's death).
During World War II, his parents moved from North London to Oxford, as it was considered a safe place to have children there.
When Stephen was 8 years old, his family moved to a city — St Albans (20 miles north of London).
Although he was not brilliant in studies, he was named Einstein in school.
At St. Albans High School, he was inspired by his math teacher- Dikran Tehta.
He had a close group of friends at St. Albans High School and with the help of his mathematics teacher, Dickran Tahta;  He built a computer from an old telephone switchboard, clock parts and other recycled components.
Stephen wanted to pursue his academics in mathematics and his father advised him to study medicine, however, he chose physics and chemistry as it was not possible to read mathematics at University College, Oxford at that time.
He was also part of the rowing team at University College, Oxford.
He did his research in the field of cosmology at Cambridge under the guidance of Denis Sciama.
In Cambridge, Stephen fell in love with Jane Wilde (a friend of his sister's) before being diagnosed with her illness.
From 1979 to 2009, he served as the Lucasian Professor of Mathematics in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics.
In 1963, at the age of 21, while in Cambridge, Stephen was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) - a motor neuron disease.
After being diagnosed with ALS, Stephen succumbed to depression as doctors predicted he had only 2 years to live, however, he returned to his work with the encouragement of Dennis Sciama.
His physical abilities declined in the late 1960s.
He developed visual methods (including viewing equations in terms of geometry), as he gradually lost the ability to write.
Stephen was considered a very witty and funny collaborator.
By 1977, his wife met Church Choir singer- Jonathan Heller Jones, who later romantically joined her.
By the 1980s, Stephen became very close to one of his nurses, Elaine Mason, and later married him in September 1995.
Gradually, his speech also deteriorated and in order to communicate, he received a computer program - Equalizer in 1986 from Walter Voltsoz (CEO of Words Plus).
In 2005, he gradually lost the use of his hands and began to control his communication devices with movements of his cheek muscles (with a rate of 1 word / minute).
Stephen was involved in systems with Intel researchers who could transform their facial expressions and brain patterns into switch activities and eventually settled on the word Predictor, made by SwiftKey (a London-based startup).
In 2009, he lost control of his wheelchair independently and now researchers are working on a method to drive a wheelchair at his chin.
Stephen Hawking has published several books including The Universe in a Nutshell (2001) and A Brief History of Time (2005).
